When large reusable sharps such as scalpels and saws are used, employees must contain them in a way that prevents reuse or eliminates accidental injury until the device is processed. When discarding sharps, either for permanent disposal or temporarily, containers are often used with a puncture-resistant secondary container. In both reusable and disposable sharps, the permanent container may be designed to be reused. The lining, or secondary container, must be identified to avoid accidental exposure to blood or OPIM when removed from the original container. Also a reusable container may become contaminated when the secondary container has leaked. The permanent containers, when reused, must be routinely cleaned and/or disinfected.
