Engineering Practice Controls
Engineering practice controls are the primary means of protection to eliminate or minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens while using a particular device or while in a hazardous environment. Engineering controls must be examined and maintained or replaced on a regular schedule in order to insure their effectiveness. The FDA clears medical devices for marketing, but this approval is not enough to guarantee its effectiveness in reducing hazards. The employer must rely on further evidence to ensure its effectiveness in that particular situation.
